Key benefits of using spf

  • Reduces the risk of skin cancer: Skin cancer can be caused by the harmful UV rays given from the sun. These ultraviolet rays can damage the DNA in the skin cells leading to an increased risk of skin cancer. By using an effective spf sunscreen these risks are reduced as it will protect your skin from UV rays.
  • Stops sunburn: If you have ever had sunburn you will know that it is painful and unpleasant. Sunburn is a direct result of being exposed to the suns uv rays. If you use spf on your skin it will help reduce the chance of getting burnt by the sun as it creates a barrier between your skin and the uv rays.
  • Minimises skin aging: Ultraviolet rays can make the skin less supple and elastic. Over time if you expose your skin to the sun without the use of sunscreen your collagen and elastin will suffer damage and as a result, your skin will look older and more wrinkled. Yet another great reason to use an effective spf.
  • Reduce the signs of skin damage: The uv rays emitted by the sun can also cause other types of skin damage such as sagging skin and hyperpigmentation. Using sunscreen can help to protect your skin from these types of damage as well.

Please be fully aware however that sunscreen is not a 100% preventative measure. Unfortunately, it is just a step in your skincare routine that will help reduce the risks posed by the sun but you should be aware of the specific application guidelines given on each product. This will ensure you are using the spf as intended for maximum protection against skin aging.

Tips for applying spf correctly:

Below we have listed some of the best tips for applying spf properly:

  • Apply liberally to the skin at least 30 minutes before going into direct sunlight.
  • Always reapply spf every two hours. If sweating, you will need to apply more frequently to keep up the protective barrier against UV rays.
  • Sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher will provide better protection.
  • Choose sunscreen that is named “broad spectrum”. This means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Choose Oil-free and non-comedogenic if you have oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Always make sure you test sunscreen on a small area of your skin before applying it to your entire body.
